A little help
Let’s get you smooshing.
Most videos are just a drop, a preset, and a Smoosh away. Here’s help with the rest.
Getting started
- Drop videos into SmooshVid or choose files.
- Choose Quality, Balanced, or Smallest.
- Pick Original Folder, Desktop, or Downloads.
- Click Smoosh. Authorize the save folder if your Mac asks.
- Use the folder button beside a finished video to find its MP4 copy.
Common questions
Which Macs and videos are supported?
SmooshVid requires Apple Silicon and macOS 13 or later. Common MOV, MP4, M4V, AVI, MKV, and WebM files are supported, depending on the codecs inside. HDR video is currently unsupported; export a standard-color copy first.
Why didn’t my video get smaller?
Some videos are already highly optimized. Try Balanced or Smallest for stronger compression. SmooshVid discards outputs that aren’t smaller and keeps your original.
Where did my video go?
Check the save destination selected in the app. The new filename includes “(Smooshed with SmooshVid)”. Use the folder button on a completed row to reveal it in Finder. Originals are never overwritten.
Why does SmooshVid ask for folder access?
macOS protects your files. SmooshVid needs permission to save into the folder you choose. It remembers authorized folders so you don’t need to grant access every time.
What if my video won’t process?
Confirm it’s available locally, check free disk space, and choose the input and save folder again. Processing needs temporary space for a copy of the original and its output. A disconnected drive, unsupported codec, or damaged file can prevent compression.
Why won’t the output play on another device?
Output is HEVC video in an MP4 file. Use a player or device that supports HEVC. Some older devices and players don’t support it.
Can I cancel? Are my originals safe?
Yes. Cancel an individual video using its round cancel button, or stop the batch with Cancel. Incomplete outputs are cleaned up. Your originals stay untouched.
